Saturday, May 10th, is the designated day for the 11th annual food drive conducted by the USPS in conjunction with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association (NRLCA).  Since 1993 the second Saturday of May has been set for the collection of non-perishable food stuffs as postal patrons are encouraged to place donations by their mail boxes for their carriers to collect and funnel to local food banks.
In Ocala, Interfaith Emergency Services, a local agency organized by the churches of the community, receives these goods and distributes them though their food bank to local needy families.  While the Ocala office collected some 40,000 pounds of food last year, nationally 62.7 million pounds were collected and distributed.  This included a million pounds donated by the Campbell Soup Company, a major supporter of the drive.  Campbell is sponsoring a mailing of 104 million postcards reminding customers to place their donations by their mailboxes on May 10th.  Be sure to watch for this notice and put it in a conspicuous location to remind yourself to donate.  In addition, a widespread media campaign featuring Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Hughes and promoted by Campbell Soup has placed national public service announcements in magazines and newspapers, and on television to tell the nation about the drive.
This is a way everyone can participate in a small way to produce big results.  Every donation, no matter how large or small, makes a difference.  Do your part!
